Traffic Control Designer
Job Title: Designer
Position Summary
The Designer / Estimator is responsible for creating detailed and accurate traffic control plans using TxDOT and MUTCD specifications. This position requires proficiency in design software and a solid understanding of traffic control procedures. The role also involves cost estimation, materials calculation, and collaboration with engineers to ensure compliance, efficiency, and accuracy across all project stages.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilize Invarion software to create full-scale, detailed traffic control plans.
- Draft layouts and designs for traffic control systems based on engineering instructions.
- Review construction documents and interpret requirements to develop compliant traffic control plans.
- Conduct jobsite visits to collect relevant data necessary for accurate design creation.
- Determine required materials and calculate appropriate quantities for each project.
- Collaborate with engineers to generate cost estimates, contracts, and supporting Adocumentation for each project.
- Review and analyze current and proposed designs, workflows, and materials to identify cost reduction or efficiency opportunities.
- Evaluate staffing, equipment, and material requirements to meet production and design goals.
- Estimate costs for new equipment or capital investments when necessary.
- Prepare detailed cost analyses and distribute reports to engineers, contractors, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Forecast production and project scenarios; provide data-driven recommendations for improvements.
- Establish pricing structures to ensure products and services are profitable.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others.
- Patience and professionalism in high-pressure or complex situations.
- Comprehensive understanding of traffic control procedures and plan standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret and explain state and local laws, regulations, and ordinances relevant to traffic control.
- Proficiency with Invarion or similar design software is preferred.
- Completion of ATSSA Traffic Control Design Specialist Course required within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds at a time.
Additional Requirements
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Observed drug screen prior to employment.
- Prior drafting experience is preferred.
Work Environment
This role involves both office-based design work and occasional field site visits. The Designer / Estimator works closely with engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders to ensure all plans and estimates meet quality, compliance, and safety standards.
